Mystery Quilt
2007-2008

INTRODUCTION

Mystery Quilt

2009-2010

The mystery quilt makes a nice-sized lap quilt---approximately 53"x70". If you need to make it larger, you can add borders of your choice.

To me the hardest part of any is selecting the fabric to use because we have no idea how the fabric is going to be put together.  So hopefully these hints will make this part a bit easier.  To make the design stand out, you will need good contrast between colors and pattern.  One of your fabrics should be a "zinger"---either enough lighter or darker than your fabric choices to highlight some areas.  In total you will need 5 coordinating fabrics, plus the background.  After you have selected your fabrics, it will help a lot if yoou make a master sheet with a small sample of each fabric identified as Fabric A, Fabric B, etc.  For the5fabrics for the blocks you can select a medium light, 2 medium and 2 mediumdarks.  But if all your fabric choices are in medium colors that well also work as long as there is enought contrast between the fabrics.  Let each color stand on its own and not blend into the other fabric choices.

Choose fabrics that coordinate well together, but beyond that the sky's the limit.  The quilt will look great in anything execpt directional prints.

FABRIC REQUIREMENTS

Fabric A:      Background - 1 1/2 yards (for Blocks)
Background - 1 1/2 yards (for borders,                                                        setting  triangles and corner trangles)
NOTE:  You can use the same background in                                 the blocks and borders/setting trangles. Or you                            can use one background fabric for the blocks and                        another one for the border -- either way works,                            so its' your choice.  If you decided to use one                                 background fabic for blocks and borders then                               you'll need 3 yards total.

Fabric B:      1/2  yard

Fabric C:      1/2  yard

Fabric D:      1/2  yard

Fabric E:      1/2  yard

Fabric F:      1/2  yard ( This should be your "zinger"fabric. )
